Thunder Bay Red Amethyst is characterized by its stunning red hue, which is caused by hematite and other iron oxide inclusions within the crystal structure. This type of amethyst forms in the same geological environment as traditional purple amethyst but undergoes additional geological processes that impart the distinct red colouration.
The amethyst deposits found in the Thunder Bay District are linked to the geological formations of the Osler Group. These formations were created around 1.2 to 0.9 billion years ago, during a late Precambrian period of volcanic activity and faulting.
